Van Nuys Dentist Discusses TMJ and Ringing in the Ears

November 20, 2008

Hello everyone!

I had a wonderful inquiry this week and I wanted to hop on to my blog immediately and talk to you all about it.

Many people don’t realize that a ringing in the ears can actually be associated with a dental issue. Specifically, ringing in the ears is often a symptom of a more serious issue called TMJ.

What is TMJ?

Here’s what I can tell you about TMJ. You have two temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in your mouth, one on either side, and these are the joints that you use to open a close your mouth. Every time you open your mouth to talk, chew or yawn or anything else, you are using your TMJ joints. These same muscles attach to your ear joints, and this is what can cause the ringing in the ears.

Ringing in the ears

Ringing in the ears is actually one of the most common symptoms of TMJ, but it often leave patients feeling confused and frustrated and unsure as to how it relates to their teeth. Ringing in the ears doesn’t necessarily make you think of TMJ, but it can be TMJ that you are experiencing.

What causes TMJ

TMJ can stem from any number of things like gum chewing or teeth grinding. And it can lead to so many problems, like soar jaw, headaches, pain in the neck, face or shoulders, or even earaches and dizziness.
